Brian Holmewood

I work predominantly in oils. I love drawing in pencil, charcoal, pen, ink and wash, also pastels – all as an investigation towards paintings. Living inland in England up to my teenage years, I found a fascination with the sea whenever I got the chance to be there. Just one of the things I love about New Zealand is the easy access to the sea, lakes and rivers and I now live right by it. I also like the fact that New Zealand is made up of two islands, which is a big part of our culture. Living by one of the last romantic fishing ports – fishing boats, jetties and seascapes predominate in one aspect of my work. The petrified forests of driftwood which feature up and down the west coast form the basis of much of the abstract works I do.
